Two different tests, two different intervals
The push-button test confirms the mechanical trip works. It is quick, it can be done by your own staff, and it is generally carried out every six months for fixed RCDs and more frequently for portable ones in daily use.
The operating time test is the one that matters most and the one that needs an instrument. It injects a known fault current and measures how many milliseconds the device takes to open. An RCD can click satisfyingly on the test button and still be too slow to protect anyone. That test is generally done every twelve months and the measured result is recorded on your report.
What we test
Portable RCDs and RCD-protected powerboards, RCDs built into site distribution boxes, and switchboard RCDs where safe access is available. Each device is recorded with its location, type, rated tripping current and measured trip time, so you have evidence rather than a tick.
Typical interval: 6 & 12 months. We confirm the right frequency for your site when we quote.

Common questions
About rcd testing
What is the difference between a push-button test and a trip time test?
The push button proves the mechanism moves. The trip time test measures how fast it moves, in milliseconds, against the limit for that device type. Only the second one tells you the RCD would actually protect somebody.
Can our staff do RCD testing themselves?
Your team can and should do the routine push-button tests — we can set up a simple log sheet for it. The measured operating time test needs calibrated instruments and is part of our scheduled visit.
