Microwave Leakage Testing

Door seals wear, hinges sag and latches get knocked. When they do, a microwave can leak radiation without any visible sign at all — which is why the test measures rather than looks.

How it is tested

First a visual inspection of the door, seal, hinges, latch interlocks and cavity for damage or corrosion. Then a measured leakage test with a calibrated survey meter around the full perimeter of the door, the seal and the viewing window, with a known water load in the cavity as the standard requires.

The measured figure is recorded against the limit in AS/NZS 60335.2.25:2020. Units that exceed it are tagged out on the spot, because unlike most faults this one gives no warning to the person standing in front of it.

Where it matters most

Staff rooms, school and early childhood kitchens, hospitality and aged care, and any older unit that has been in service for years. Age and door damage are the two strongest predictors of a fail.

How often should a workplace microwave be tested for leakage?

Every twelve months under AS/NZS 60335.2.25:2020. The appliance also needs its normal electrical test and tag at whatever interval its environment calls for — the two are separate checks.

What happens if a microwave fails?

It is tagged out and removed from service immediately, and recorded on your report. Leakage faults are usually a door seal, hinge or latch problem, and on most units replacement is more economic than repair.
